Mobile Training Unit (MTU)
The Mobile Training Unit (MTU) is a collaborative program between the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Emergency Services. The MTU brings public safety education directly to schools, community groups, organizations, and events throughout Allegheny County.
Community Education
The MTU provides age-appropriate, interactive programs designed to help the public understand what to expect when calling 9-1-1 and how Allegheny County’s emergency communications system can assist callers.
Programs can be customized to meet the needs of any audience, from Pre-K students to senior centers. Topics and demonstrations can include:
- What to expect when calling 9-1-1
- When and how to call 9-1-1
- How 9-1-1 can connect callers with an interpreter
- Text-to-9-1-1 capabilities
- How emergency dispatchers can help identify a caller’s location
- What information callers should be prepared to provide
- Careers in public safety and emergency communications
Interactive 9-1-1 Demonstrations
The MTU can provide a hands-on 9-1-1 calling experience for students and other groups.
A phone line can be connected from the MTU vehicle into a classroom, allowing participants to practice calling 9-1-1 in a realistic setting. Participants speak with a trained person inside the MTU rather than calling the actual 9-1-1 Center.
For the Interactive 9-1-1 Demonstration, the MTU vehicle must be located within 150 feet of the classroom.
Schools, Community Groups and Events
Programs can be tailored to the age, size, and needs of each group. The MTU can visit:
- Schools and school events
- Career Days
- Community meetings
- Senior centers
- Youth organizations
- Public safety events
- Community festivals and other public events
MTU staff members have the required clearances to operate in school settings. The MTU primarily serves organizations within Allegheny County. However, requests outside of Allegheny County may be considered with special permission.
