Certification Tests

Allegheny County Fire Academy (ACFA) offers certification testing as a delegated site of the Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC).

Many programs are dual accredited by:

2025 Certification Schedule(PDF, 254KB) - includes registration instructions, deadlines and payment instructions.

Payment is non-refundable once the candidate takes any portion of the test (written or practical) and regardless of the pass/fail status.

The following certification tests are available through ACFA:

  • Driver/Operator - Pumper Challenge (by individual appointment)
  • Evaluator Workshop & Hazardous Materials Operations Refresher
  • Fire Fighter I & II
  • Fire Instructor I (as part of an ACFA Educational Methodology for Local Level Instructors (EMLL) course)
  • Fire Instructor I Challenge (by individual appointment)
  • Fire Instructor II (as part of an ACFA course)
  • Fire Officer I (as part of an ACFA course)
  • Fire Officer II (as part of an ACFA course)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Challenge (by individual appointment)
  • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Hazardous Materials Technician
  • Industrial Fire Brigade - Incipient (Fire Brigades Only By Appointment - NO Individual Challenges)
  • Industrial Fire Brigade Incipient - Advanced Exterior (Fire Brigades Only By Appointment - NO Individual Challenges)

Testing Policies and Procedures

Applications, skill sheets, candidate handbooks and pre-requisite information is available online on the Office of the State Fire Commissioner website, or may be obtained by contacting us.

All completed paperwork must be returned by the test registration deadline. All applications must be either dropped off in person or mailed. No email, fax, or electronic submissions will be accepted.

Copies of pre-requisites must accompany the application. The Fire Chief’s signature will not be accepted.

Failure to appear for a test without 24-hour notice will result in the candidate's suspension from attending classes or certification tests for a period of one calendar year. Cancellations may be made by emailing FireAcademyCancellations@alleghenycounty.us.
