Lieutenant Brett Whittenberger

Lieutenant Brett Whittenberger is responsible for providing collaborative police training and education to all law enforcement stakeholders in Allegheny County.

Lieutenant Whittenberger began his law enforcement career in 2003 as a police officer in Butler County, PA. In 2006, Lieutenant Whittenberger joined the Allegheny County Police Department as a patrol officer assigned to District One, Pittsburgh International Airport. In 2008, he was transferred to the Investigative Division as a detective assigned to Executive Protection and remained in this position until 2011. From 2011 to 2018, he was detailed to the FBI Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) as a task force officer.

In 2018, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to District One as a patrol supervisor. In 2020, he was transferred to the Investigative Division as the unit commander for Internal Affairs. In 2022, Lieutenant Whittenberger was promoted to his current rank and remained the unit commander for Internal Affairs.

Lieutenant Whittenberger was appointed Director of the Allegheny County Police Training Academy in January 2023.

In addition to his regular duties, Lieutenant Whittenberger serves as a team leader for the Crisis Negotiator Team and a coordinator for the police department’s Big Brother Big Sister program. Lieutenant Whittenberger is also a certified Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) general instructor and firearms instructor.

Lieutenant Whittenberger holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from La Roche College and a master’s degree in Intelligence and Global Security from Point Park University.
