Obtaining a Report for a U.S. Citizens Who Dies Abroad

When a U.S. citizen dies in a foreign country, the death is normally reported to the nearest U.S. consular office. The consul prepares the official Report of the Death of an American Citizen Abroad (Form DS-2060), and a copy of the Report of Death is filed permanently at the U.S. Department of State, except for members of the Armed Forces (see exception below).

Twenty (20) copies of DS-2060 are provided for no fee and automatically sent to the next of kin. The fee for additional copies of DS-2060 is determined by 22 CFR 22.1, and may be subject to change.
