The Allegheny County-City of Pittsburgh hygiene kit drive has now ended. For those wishing to help in other ways, financial donations are also accepted by Brother’s Brother. Credit card donations can be made at www.brothersbrother.org, by choosing Ukraine Relief in the dropdown menu. Checks should be made payable to Brother's Brother Foundation and sent to Brother’s Brother Foundation, P.O. Box 645934, Pittsburgh, PA, 15264-5257. Please note Ukraine Relief in the memo field.

The Allegheny County Music Festival Fund, dedicated to providing life-enriching items and opportunities to children, is supported through two annual fundraisers: Allegheny County Music Festival and Candidates' Comedy Night. Monetary donations are always welcomed. Please make checks payable to the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund.

The Holiday Project provides new gifts for children who are in families receiving services through the DHS Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF) and those who are living with their parent(s) in a homeless shelter. There are several ways to make a donation to the Holiday Project including purchasing a gift directly for a child, coordinating a gift drive, or making a monetary donation. Accepted items: NEW, unwrapped, toys, gifts and stocking-stuffers for children and youth ages birth to 18 years.

Project Prom accepts new and gently used formal attire, in anticipation of the upcoming prom season. Related gift cards and monetary donations are always welcomed.

Donations (with a label that indicates they are for Project Prom) may be dropped off by Friday, April 5, 2024 at the following location:

Retailers and wholesalers may arrange pick-up for large donations by calling 412-350-3428.

Donations may also be mailed to the attention of the Event and Donations Team at the HSB address.

In-kind wish list
New or gently used formal gowns, especially plus and petite sizes; formal shoes and jewelry. All gently used items must be cleaned, undamaged and of a current style.

Monetary donations
Checks should be made payable to: DHS Donations Fund with “Project Prom” on the memo line and mailed to: DHS Project Prom/Event and Donations Team, Human Services Building, One Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Reading Ready fosters the joy of reading by providing new, donated books to Allegheny County families with young children and new readers (ages newborn to six years). Donations are accepted year-round.

Wish List

It’s simple to make your selection from the Amazon Reading Ready list of books that represent cultural diversity and a variety of reading abilities. Or, you may choose a favorite board book or picture book for newborns and toddlers, a read-to-me book for preschoolers, or an early reading book for new readers.

Your donation, with a note tucked in the front cover that indicates it is for Reading Ready, may be dropped at the guard’s desk in the lobby of the Human Services Building (HSB), One Smithfield Street, Pgh., PA 15222, weekdays between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

You may also mail your donation to Reading Ready, c/o DHS Events and Donations Team, One Smithfield Street, First Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Arrangements can be made for DHS to pick up large donations of 50 or more books by calling 412-350-3428.

Purchases made through the Amazon Reading Ready account are automatically sent to DHS.

The Winter Shelter is open from November 15 through March 15 to accommodate homeless individuals overnight.

The following items, in new condition, for adults only, can be donated to Operation Safety Net (OSN) for distribution at the Winter Shelter. No warm-weather clothing can be accepted.

DHS welcomes individuals and groups in the community to assist with our efforts to support the individuals and families we serve.

But please, call the DHS Office of Equity and Engagement (OEE) at 412-350-6787 before you begin a collection on our behalf, as most of our donation drives are seasonal.

Once we know your intentions, we can provide advice and ensure that the timing is right and that there is a good match between your collected items and those needed.

In-kind Donations

• Baby supplies – diapers in various sizes, new crib linens, unopened wipes and bath supplies
• Books – new and gently read books for infants, children, youth, and young adults
• Correspondence materials – new birthday and other special occasion greeting cards, stationery and “forever” stamps for older adults
• Formal attire and accessories – new and used-but-ready-to-wear formal gowns, wraps, jewelry, hosiery, cummerbunds, bow ties, pocket squares, socks, and shoes for prom
• Furniture – new and gently used furniture for living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms for young adults moving toward independence
• Handmade items – new knitted or crocheted blankets for infants, sweaters for children and shawls for older adults
• School supplies – new backpacks, notebooks, pens, highlighters, glue sticks etc. for children, teens and young adults
• Toiletries – unopened hair care, soaps, dental care, sanitary products and skin care items for adults in shelters and transition-age youth
• Toys and gifts – new only art/craft kits, racially diverse dolls, action figures, stuffed animals, building blocks, cars and trucks, journals, bikes/helmets, clothing, purses etc. as appropriate for infants, children, and teens

The Alliance is a partnership of nonprofit charitable agencies in western Pennsylvania that have joined forces to form the first collaborative effort in the history of Pittsburgh's thrift and resale shops. Proceeds from your purchases and donations support positive change throughout our communities. Our children and families still benefit from these generous donations.
