Family and Child Health Programs

The Office of Family and Child Health aims to enhance the quality of life and health of mothers/birthing persons, infants, children, and families in Allegheny County, regardless of circumstance. Services are available for pregnant individuals, parents, or caregivers of children under two years old. The Allegheny County Health Department partners with local organizations such as Cribs for Kids and Hello Baby to provide additional support and resources. Cribs for Kids offers resources and education about safe sleeping practices, and Hello Baby provides breastfeeding, child development, and parenting resources.

Allegheny County is hiring compassionate nurses for the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) program. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing services to women and their families eligible for the Nurse Family Partnership Program. Home Visiting Services

As part of the Home Visiting Program, nurses meet with families in the comfort of their own home or in other convenient locations to offer support and assist in meeting parenting goals.

NFP

Nurse-Family Partnership logoThe Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) offers support services to parents expecting their first child. Nurses provide in-person home visits during pregnancy and offer follow-up care after birth for moms/birthing persons and their children up to 24 months of age. To qualify, applicants must live in Allegheny County and meet the income guidelines.

Healthy Families

Healthy Families Allegheny logo Healthy Families Allegheny (a Healthy Families America program) provides expecting parents and parents of newborns with free in-home child development support until 36 months (3 years of age). A home visiting nurse will be there to help develop and reach parenting goals through education and support.

Healthy Moms & Babies

Maternal/Birthing Parent and Child Health
Nurses provide home visits or telephone visits during pregnancy and after birth to make sure families get the necessary medical services. They also offer information to improve the entire family's health.

Children with Special Health Care Needs
Nurses offer medical service assistance, home visits, and case management to families with children who have special health care needs.

Liaison Nursing
Nurses give information and educational materials about maternal and child health to doctors, hospitals, school nurses, and community organizations.

Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) Anyone who is currently pregnant, and a first-time mother
Healthy Families Allegheny Anyone who is currently pregnant or is less than two-weeks post-partum
Healthy Moms & Healthy Babies Anyone who is currently pregnant or is parent/caregiver of child up to 2 years old
Fatherhood/Partner Engagement Anyone who is a father or father-like figure in a child’s life
Smoking Cessation Anyone who is currently pregnant or has small children in the home

Any parents who gave birth in the last 6 weeks can receive period products, bibs, pregnancy tests, digital thermometers, condoms, journals, breast pads, and tips for postpartum care

This program is designed to help increase the number of infants receiving human milk in Allegheny County.

Father/Partner Engagement Program

The Father/Partner Engagement Program is designed to provide a positive outlet for fathers and partners. Father/Partner Engagement Specialists are trained to help new parents meet their goals and help them grow through their parenting journey. Services include:

  • Home Visiting
  • Coaching Calls

Fathering in 15™

Smoking Cessation Support

Smoking cessation support is available to people who are pregnant or have small children living with them. Support services are available from Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists, individually or in a group setting, where available.
