Dental Sealants

Each year, our pediatric dentists visit schools in low-income areas to provide examinations and dental sealants to first and second grade students. A dental sealant is a coating that is designed to help prevent cavities.

Parents are informed of all examinations and are advised to seek follow-up care at one of our clinics or with a private dentist.

This service is provided at select schools. If your school participates in the dental sealant program, your child will be sent home with a permission slip. Only children whose parents sign the permission slip will be able to receive the examination and sealants.

This project is sponsored by The Allegheny County Health Department in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.

Importance of Dental Sealants

Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Pain and suffering due to untreated tooth decay can lead to problems with eating, speaking, and even paying attention in school. Our dental sealant program aims to help prevent tooth decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are special coatings that are placed on the top surface of molars in the back of the mouth. The sealant prevents food, sugar, and bacteria from getting into the grooves of the teeth and causing cavities. Once it is applied, the sealant lasts for several years.

Who Can Get Sealants?

Children who have permanent molars can have sealants applied. Most kids get these teeth by the time they are in the first or second grade. It is important that the tooth is protected before decay begins, so it is best to apply sealants as soon as children get their adult molars.

How are Sealants Applied?

First, the dentist cleans the surface of each molar. Second, they use a brush to apply the sealant. The whole process is painless and only takes about 10 minutes.

How Much Does It Cost?

The dental exam and sealant application are provided in at no cost to parents; however, the program relies on insurance like Medicaid to help cover the costs.

As a Parent, What Do I Need to Do?

If your child’s school is part of the dental sealant program, a permission slip will be sent home. Please sign it and return it to the school. We can only apply sealants to your child’s teeth if they have a signed permission slip on file when our dentists arrive at the school.

How Many Children are Given Sealants Through This Program?

Approximately 700 children across high-risk areas of Allegheny County receive sealants every year.
