Caregiver Opportunities

Caregiving Opportunities Offered through DHS

If you have room in your heart and, in some cases, your home for a child, adult or older adult, there are several opportunities to become a valued caregiver.

For a Child Under 18 Years of Age

Adoption
Adoption provides a loving, forever-home for a child whose safety and well-being cannot be ensured with his or her birth parents.

Fostering
Fostering provides a loving, temporary home for a child until his or her parent(s) can resume full responsibility or until a permanent home is found.

For an Individual Registered with the Office of Developmental Supports (ODS)

Life Sharing
Life Sharing pairs a supportive and caring household with eligible individuals registered with ODS. Supports Coordinators can assist with more information. Life Sharing Caregivers can be a family member or family friend of the individual or a community member. To learn more about becoming a qualified Life Sharing Caregiver call the Office of Developmental Supports at 412-253-1399 and ask for the LifeSharing lead staff.

For an Adult 18 Years of Age and Older

Dom Care
Dom Care (adult foster care) matches a caring family with a person who is unable to live independently due to age-related limitations, mental health concerns and/or intellectual or physical disability.

Senior Companion Program
The Senior Companion program matches adults 60+ with someone their age to come to their home and visit. Companions can visit once or twice a week to go on walks, watch TV or just talk. You can apply for this free program by calling SeniorLine at 412-350-5460.
