Inmate Medical Care

Healthcare Provider

The jail contracts with Allegheny Health Network for provider services, including doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The doctors are based on the 5B housing unit, which functions as the jail’s in-house emergency room and hospital. Doctors make daily rounds for individuals incarcerated on 5B and respond to sick calls on other housing units as needed.

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are based at the clinic on Level 5, where individuals receive routine, scheduled care. AHN specialists who visit the jail weekly, such as cardiologists, orthopedists, and obstetrics/gynecologists, also see individuals at the clinic.

Non-provider medical personnel are employed by Allegheny County or through temporary staffing agencies, rather than through AHN. This includes Assistant Directors of Nursing (ADONs), registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, medical assistants and medical technicians.

These personnel also work in the clinic, on housing units and in the jail’s intake department. They clear individuals for incarceration, conduct physical assessments after individuals are committed to the facility and respond to sick calls on the pods and in the intake department. These individuals can refer the individual to a provider for more advanced care if needed.

All medical personnel, including AHN, county, and staffing agency employees, are collaborate and are fully integrated into the jail’s medical services.

Behavioral Assessment Unit

An incarcerated individual may be evaluated by the Behavioral Assessment Unit (BAU) to determine if there is a risk of self or ‘other’ harm. The BAU may also evaluate if an incarcerated individual is capable of participating in his/her own legal defense. The BAU is not a Department of Human Services (DHS) unit.
